BOOST Your Cable Locators Signal

Locating buried cables by a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT or cable locator) works by detecting electromagnetic signals passing through the utility (cable or pipe).

Where there is a weak or no signal present, the utility cannot be detected with just a cable. An artificial signal is applied to the utility to provide a detectable signal and improve the detection reliability. A signal generator (Genny) applies a signal to the utility, which the cable locator can detect.

The cable locator is set to the same signal mode as the genny. Commonly this is a 33 kHz signal, although other frequencies are also used with different characteristics and advantage depending on the site situation and application.



Boosting the Signal
Some applications may encounter a small diameter cable running in the ground, which on occasions may cause the signal from the signal generator to reduce in strength and become undetectable.

Some modern signal generators provide the option of increasing the signal frequency or increasing the signal power.

Cable Detection provides the ‘BOOST’ mode in their signal generators, increasing the energy transferred through the tracing utility above the normal level output. Where a 2x signal output results in 2x improvement in the CAT detected signal.

Cable Detection’s signal transmitters are available with increased output power setting controls, the T100 to a maximum of 1 Watt and T300 to a maximum of 3 Watt. The variable output power settings enable the operator to select the right level of signal boost for the site conditions, normally the power on "default level "is OK for most applications with good battery life and trace performance, rated at 100 mW, this is the common industry standard.

Where site conditions require increased performance the transmitter output setting can be increased to HIGH or BOOST levels, the site conditions for this might include greater tracing range, inducing a signal onto a deeper utility (where the efficiency is reduced) or where the cable impedance is high and low level of signal is present (small diameter cable).



Performance improvement
The performance of the combination between the cable locator and signal transmitter can be improved by increasing the signal frequency (131 kHz gives 4x improved signal over 33 kHz) or by boosting the power of the same signal x4 with T100 or x12 with T300.

It should also be understood that when increasing the signal frequency that the tracing signal will be increased but perhaps importantly the tracing range is reduced.

In comparison boosting the transmitter power delivers the same locating performance benefit and perhaps importantly for some users with the added benefit of the same tracing characteristics and increased range that may also be important.

The new GPS feature needs no operator input to function. The Radiodetection gC.A.T4 locator starts acquiring a satellite lock when the trigger is first pressed, and once acquired maintains the fix for a set time even if the trigger is released, to be ready when next used.



Enhanced Data For Fleet Managers
The comprehensive data logging capabilities of the RD gC.A.T4 allow fleet managers to review one year or more of usage data which can then be used to assess individual locate operations in order to ensure compliance with best-practice, or to identify training needs.

By using the C.A.T Manager PC Software users can export CSV, XLS or KML files that can be quickly imported into map services like Google Earth.

1 Digital Technology
Cable Detection developed the EZiCAT system to benefit from state-of-the-art full digital signal processing technology (DSP). This ensures that users obtains the highest accuracy, receiving detailed information about the location of buried utilities, essential to protect employees and equipment during any excavation project.

Non digital cable avoidance tools are designed with numerous internal boards, controlled by variable resistors, which need constant adjustment by trained service technicians. These older devices cannot self-monitor their internal settings, nor indicate to the user if there is a problem with the device. Equipment which functions incorrectly will return incorrect signals without the user knowing.

2 Depth indication

3 Current measurement
The Cable Detection EZiCAT Current Measurement indicates the amount current flowing through a service applied by a transmitter.

The transmitter is used to apply a signal (current) to the required service. The signal can also couple to additional services making it hard to distinguish by conventional locating techniques.

The highest current reading (mA) will be obtained when the locator is positioned over the service which has the transmitter attached to it.

4 Wireless data communication
Cable Detection has incorporated Bluetooth wireless connectivity into their range of EZiCAT cable locators. Wireless connectivity allows the EZiCAT to integrate seamlessly with mobile mapping technology to log survey data, in addition to enabling wireless Bluetooth data transfer.

5 Datalogging
Cable Detection EZiCAT system a fully digital datalogging system, which stores the instrument’s activity and function usage.

Information is recorded every second and held within the locator’s internal memory. This data can be retrieved and transferred via Bluetooth to a PC or other electronic device for analysis. Storage time is approximately 80 hours use.

6 Hazard zone
Buried utilities close to the surface pose a safety risk to site works. The Cable Detection Hazard Zone function provides an additional warning of the close proximity of buried services, alerting users to the immediate danger.


7 Peak Hold
When activated, the Peak Hold function shows the highest peak reading obtained during the pinpoint process.

To find the direction of the service, first find the highest peak reading, and then rotate the EZiCAT locator on its axis. When the blade of the Locator is in line with the service, the signal strength indicator is at its minimum.


8 Tilt sensor
A common problem when searching for buried services, is the way an operator utilises the cable avoidance tool. Swinging the locator is common whilst undertaking a sweep search.

The correct way is to hold all cable avoidance tools in a vertical / upright position and close to the ground.

The tilt sensor indicates if the user has ‘tilted’ or ‘swung’ the instrument during use. The datalogging system will record the tilt sensor activity alongside function data. This shows the equipment / office manager if the readings could be affected by misuse.


8 Internal GPS
A new addition to the advanced settings of Cable Detection’s EZiCAT range, an internal GPS module tracks the geographical position (Latitude and Longitude). The geographical GPS data is stored in the log file and provides information on where the locator was utilised.

The internal GPS system allows equipment managers the ability to verify that the correct area of land has been surveyed for buried cables and if a problem occurs, can pin point the exact location.


9 Xf version
The Cable Detection EZiSYTEM xf range has been specifically designed with long distance tracing in mind. The ability to trace low transmitter frequencies provides a greater tracing range as well as the ability to locate camera inspection systems.

Location of buried services provides a constant strain to all building and civil engineering related projects. In today’s congested environment, it is imperative to locate services accurately and record these locations with pin point accuracy.

It’s pin point accuracy that is the key to saving lives. Cable avoidance tools are now powerful enough to trace a single service, provide depth estimation and warn if the instrument has been tilted, causing an error in their readings.

But, detailing the service and marking areas of a search has always been left to pen and paper. That is to say, a hand drawn diagram of the area surveyed is often sketched, not to scale or precise. Misinterpretation of the diagram can cause people to dig in areas that contain buried services, resulting in a cable strike and damage to the utility.

Recent upgrades to the utility infrastructure has required all services to be located to the highest accuracy and records kept digitally for historical reference. Cable Detection EZiCAT XF - Precision Location

Cable Detection recently launched an upgraded version of their successful EZiCAT cable location range with the XF version.

The Cable Detection EZiCAT range of cable locators provide outstanding location performance, but like all standard cable avoidance tools, they are restricted to standard location activities.

This is partly due to their outstanding cost. You would not expect them to have the same features and capabilities of higher performance instruments, like the RD4000, which has been specifically designed for precision location activities in the telecommunication, utility or power industries. These environments demand cable location equipment which can precisely detect and trace a service through very congested surroundings.

Well, the new EZiCAT XF series helps to bridge the gap between the performance of higher end models and the familiarity of the standard cable location models.

Equipment with precision, digital trace technology, the Cable Detection EZiCAT XF range delivers a greater range of location frequencies, deeper depth detection and a longer trace distance. These enhanced features firmly place the EZiCAT XF range between Radiodetection’s RD4000 and RD8000 models!

Greater Depth Detection
A common problem is the maximum depth that a standard instrument can detect a sonde. Applications greater than 3m can cause the cable avoidance tool to miss the signal from the sonde. The EZiCAT XF features an enhanced depth detection allowing a sonde to be located up to 10m.

Signal Strength Indication (SSI)
Congested utilities provide another issue, ghost or shadow signals. A ghost signal can be created when a utility is inducted with a signal from a signal generator. It is a common problem, causing the operator to trace the wrong utility. This can be overcome with the Signal Strength Indicator (SSI) which displays the strength of the signal allowing the operator to trace the right service and not chase shadows!

A common misinterpretation is where a locator displays the gain (dB) to indicate the amount of signal detected. The amount of signal is also a factor of depth, i.e. if the service carries the same signal but deeper then more gain is needed. The SSI reading on the EZiCAT is depth compensated so gives a better "true indication" of signal strength independent of the service depth and so will more reliable than just using dB reading.

Wider Frequencies
The Cable Detection EZiCAT XF features a wider range of frequencies when searching in transmitter mode. When operated with the new EZiTEX XF signal generators, the operator can select 8kHz, 33khz, 512kHz or 640kHz to provide a crisper tracing signal when working in a congested environment. 33kHz can jump onto multiple signals whilst 512kHz remains on the original service.

Higher Watts
A longer trace distance is activated by utilising the EZITEX i300XF signal generator which provides a stronger 3 watt signal. This is transmitted through the utility and in turn picked up by the EZiCAT XF cable locators.

A stronger signal will improve the quality of locating electrical services where the presence of electrical interference can hamper the location survey.

The extra power of the EZiTEX i300XF signal generator results in a greater tracing range and a better outcome where there are high impedance lines, like telecom cables where the additional power delivers a better locate signal.

Easier Tracing
The finial point which needs to be made is the way the Cable Detection range locates signals. Other manufacturers’ instruments detects the signal when traveling across (90 degrees) to the utility, forcing the operator to walk back and forth across the service. Whilst with the Cable Detection EZiCAT, the operator walks in line with the service, reducing distance travelled and time spent locating.

Cable Detection Network Rail Approval

In order for an instrument to be utilised in and around the United Kingdom’s rail infrastructure, Network Rail has to grant product acceptance.

The product acceptance process provides assurance to Network Rail that products when accepted for use on or about our infrastructure are:
a) Safe
b) Fit for purpose
c) Do not export unacceptable risks to Network Rail infrastructure

Only accepted products - except as allowed by NR/L2/RSE/100/05 - shall be used on the rail infrastructure


Cable avoidance tools are an essential safety instrument, especially in an environment where heavy duty power cables can lie just below the rail bed surface. Surprisingly, not all cable avoidance tools have been granted approval.


This is not the case for Cable Detection’s range of EZiCAT i-series and xf series cable avoidance tools. Both the cable locators and signal generators are approved through certificate PA05/04866.

Simple Way To Improve Utility Detection



We are all aware that there is a high risk of series injury or death from striking a buried utility whilst digging. So naturally we utilise a Cable Avoidance Tool (C.A.T) to search for the presence of buried cables, pipes and other utilities.

Like all safety related equipment, operators should undertake training to understand the correct use of cable avoidance tools. How the equipment is operated will directly affect the performance of the instrument and on occasions cause the C.A.T not to pick up the presence of a buried utility.

The following simple points highlight ways improve the search for buried utilities.



When undertaking a search, we should sweep not only the excavation area but the surrounding terrain to determine the route or path of any utilises that may be present. The sweep should be steady and deliberate, ensuring the whole area is covered by adopting a grid pattern.

How the C.A.T is held can affect the performance of the instrument. If the operator privets their arms and swings the C.A.T, the base of the instrument is lifted into the air and will not be searching for a signal in the ground.

The correct way to hold a C.A.T, is with the instrument vertical and the bottom end just above the ground.

By adopting the correct method of use, will help improve the performance of any instrument. However, there will be occasions where buried cables may not radiate a signal or are too weak.


The perfect example is locating the power cable running to a street light or sign. If the main light is off, the cable may not generate a live signal.

By utilising a Signal Generator (Genny) with the C.A.T, will enhance the search capability. The Genny will apply a tone to a buried cable which can be picked up by the C.A.T locator switched to the Genny mode.

There are two ways the Genny can apply a signal. The first is to directly connect to the service and the second to place the Genny in the area of the utility and ‘induce’ a signal.



The direct connection method is an ideal solution for checking a street light power cable. The connection lead is clipped to the metal cover of the street lamp with the second part clipped to the earth stake. Once plugged in, the Genny will transmit a signal to the metal street light frame which in turn is earth through the power cable.

With the operator standing approximately 10 paces away from the Genny (to avoid any chance of picking it up directly), the operator sweeps the area around the street light.

When the C.A.T is passed over the ‘induced’ utility, the display will indicate a peak signal. By moving slowly backwards and forwards, the operator will reduce the sensitivity to narrow the response.

Once the signal has been identified, the operator can turn the instrument on it’s axis until the signal reduces. This indicates that the C.A.T is above and in line with the target.

This procedure is then replicated until the length of the line has been traced.



When inducing a signal through the Induction method, the Genny is placed over the utility. A signal is applied to the utility, allowing the operator to trace with the C.A.T. But in congested areas, multiple services can be induced with the same signal.



If this is the case, the Genny can be placed on its side over the second utility to screen its signal, allowing the operator to trace the original service without interference.

Cable Detection’s new EZiCAT i600 / i650 and LOGiCAT System





Cable Detection recently introduced a new digital range of cable avoidance tools (CATs), the i-Series has revolutionised the field of cable avoidance.

Leading the path of this new revolution is the EZiCAT i600 and i650 cable avoidance tools, make locating underground cables and pipes a simple and efficient task, ultimately saving time and money.

Cable Detection recently introduced a range of high specification cable avoidance tools, the new EZiCAT i600 and i650 cable LOCATORS. Both models incorporate data logging and Bluetooth wireless functionality, allowing the instruments to be fully analysed through Cable Detection's unique LOGiCAT SOFTWARE.

On board memory function records the activity of the devices to allow plant mangers to verify the EZiCAT’s usage and provides the ability to recall records following a near miss or service strike or similar incident. The on board memory can then be downloaded via Bluetooth wireless data transfer.

Data logging
The EZiCAT i600 / i650 cable avoidance tools record and store information whilst they are in use. The locators start to record information every second after completion of the initial start-up routine. These records (logs) are stored in the locators memory and can be retrieved and transferred via Bluetooth to a PC for analysis. The locators are capable of storing approximately 80 hours of records.

Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity
Both the EZiCAT i600 and i650 locators have the added benefit of Bluetooth wireless connectivity. It allows the EZiCAT to integrate seamlessly with mobile mapping technology to log survey data, in addition to enabling wireless Bluetooth data transfer.

LOGiCAT Software
Once downloaded, the LOGiCAT software retrieves the following information from the locator:

Time and Date Information
Identifies when and at what time ground surveys were conducted

Usage Duration
Determines how long survey teams searched for buried services and discovers actual product utilisation.

User Identification
Forces users to become accountable for their actions and identifies those who need additional product training.

Detection Mode Used
Allows managers to judge the quality and thoroughness of work. As more comprehensive ground surveys are conducted the locator records the mode of operation including the use of a signal generator.

Service Detection
Discovers quickly if any buried services were detected during surveys and even determines the signal strength shown on the locator.

Product Fleet Management
Displays and monitors the service and calibration dates of your locator fleet, ensuring they are kept in perfect working order and not being used when calibration is due.

Diagnostic Check
Displays locators which have failed the EST (Extended self test) and removes them from the active fleet for immediate repair. This reduces the possibility of defective equipment being used on site.

Management Reports
Produces basic statistical reports from the logged data, allowing users to see how products are utilised and how ground survey teams are using themon-site.

Why purchase a Cable Detection EZiCAT?

Cable Detection EZiSYSTEM range of cable avoidance tools (CAT) are becoming the preferred cable avoidance system with most civil engineering contractors. But why purchase the Cable Detection EZiCAT?

Most cable avoidance tools operate through an analogue system which requires complicate electronics and numerous switches to be set correctly to detect buried services.

Cable Detection uses state-of-the-art digital signal processing technology (DSP), removing switches, designed to be user friendly and more importantly, provides the maximum protection to the operator.


Better Operation
When detecting buried cables with standard cable avoidance locators, the instruments will only detect the specific search mode (Power, Radio or Genny modes) engaged by the operator.

That is to say, the operator will need to turn a switch to engage the search mode and rotate the Sensitivity Control for maximum sensitivity. In some cases, the operator will forget to setup the CAT correctly or the switches are damaged.

With the Cable Detection EZiCAT system, the instrument automatically starts in Power mode and with maximum sensitivity. This avoids human error and with the self test function, the cable locator can be tested in the field before use.
