The ISO double-run electronic accuracy for Leica Sprinter 50 / 150 / 150M / 250M are 2.0mm / 1.5mm / 1.5mm / 1.0mm respectively. For all the models, the ISO double-run optical accuracy is 2.5mm.

What is the shortest focusing distance?

Cable Detection recently introduced a new digital range of cable avoidance tools (CATs), the i-Series has revolutionised the field of cable avoidance.

Leading the path of this new revolution is the EZiCAT i600 and i650 cable avoidance tools, make locating underground cables and pipes a simple and efficient task, ultimately saving time and money.

Cable Detection recently introduced a range of high specification cable avoidance tools, the new EZiCAT i600 and i650 cable LOCATORS. Both models incorporate data logging and Bluetooth wireless functionality, allowing the instruments to be fully analysed through Cable Detection's unique LOGiCAT SOFTWARE.

On board memory function records the activity of the devices to allow plant mangers to verify the EZiCAT’s usage and provides the ability to recall records following a near miss or service strike or similar incident. The on board memory can then be downloaded via Bluetooth wireless data transfer.

Data logging
The EZiCAT i600 / i650 cable avoidance tools record and store information whilst they are in use. The locators start to record information every second after completion of the initial start-up routine. These records (logs) are stored in the locators memory and can be retrieved and transferred via Bluetooth to a PC for analysis. The locators are capable of storing approximately 80 hours of records.

Bluetooth Wireless Connectivity
Both the EZiCAT i600 and i650 locators have the added benefit of Bluetooth wireless connectivity. It allows the EZiCAT to integrate seamlessly with mobile mapping technology to log survey data, in addition to enabling wireless Bluetooth data transfer.

The design of a safety harness is a feat of engineering. It has to be comfortable for long periods of time whilst taking into account the force of a fall.

When a manufacturer designs a harness, it is always based on the requirements of a male. The chest, back and leg straps will be positioned for men, but do not take into account the requirements of females who often find these harnesses uncomfortable to wear.

Safety concerns have been raised about the dynamics of the harness when a female wearing a male harness falls. Often the chest straps tighten, causing damage to breast tissue.

IPAF Harness Kit

Working at height is one of the most dangerous professions, so it is imperative that safety is never overlooked.

Employers and operatives alike have an extensive list of precautions to undertake before a mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) is operated. This includes checking ground conditions, weather and overhead crushing hazards.

But what would happen if the platform preformed a sudden movement? You may not be in any position to avoid violent movement of the basket. But there is a real risk of serious injury or death from being catapulted out. The correct use of a harness can prevent you from being thrown out.

The recent Clunk Click campaign by The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) highlighted the importance for all users of platforms to wear a full body harness with a short restraint lanyard attached to a suitable anchor point.

Similarly the HSE has published an information sheet - HSE Information Sheet MISC614, detailing that a work restraint system for use on a MEWP should normally be a combination of a full body harness.

Older lanyards offend feature shock absorbing packs and lengths of up to 6 feet. This type of lanyard would not stop an operative falling out of the basket. By utilising a short restraint lanyard, the operative is ‘stopped’ or restrained from falling.

Working with IPAF, Ridgegear has developed a harness kit specifically designed for operatives working from heights.

Confined Space Entry – is your gas detector right for the job?

Working in confined spaces is difficult at the best of times. Operators often have to wear full PPE (personal protective equipment), are usually harnessed and may be carrying tools and equipment.

The last thing a worker in this arduous environment needs to worry about is his or her gas detector. It should be designed specifically for confined space entry (CSE) applications, be unobtrusive and have a clear display that is easy to see at a glance.

There is a wide range of safety equipment required for CSE environments, but gas detection is one of the most important and commonly overlooked instruments.

Users of gas detectors have typically had to make a choice between pumped units, diffusion models, or with ‘parasitic’ pumps. Handheld detectors are supplied in differing sizes and many are not optimised for confined space work.

So, what are the requirements of the ‘ideal’ CSE gas detector?

Crowcon has undertaken extensive market research among users and fleet managers. This has identified five essential features:

Points to consider when purchasing a cross line laser

When purchasing a line laser, consider quality of the laser beam, the accuracy and how wide the beam is projected. Beam Quality The quality of the laser beam should play an important role in deciding which line laser to purchase. A high quality line laser will provide a crisp beam throughout the line. Whilst a cheap alternative will provide a thicker, more defused laser line. The Leica Lino L2+ incorporates a very high quality laser beam which projects the best laser line of its class. This award winning laser has been designed to project a very crisp line throughout the beams divergence. Fan of the Beam The laser line is projected from the laser diode and out through the lens. The angle of the laser line or fan is determined by position of the diodes and quality of the lens. Most line lasers can only project a beam less than 120 degrees with the lens defusing the extreme edges of the beam. To improve the beams angle, manufactures have adjusted the diodes' position closer to the front of the instrument. This improves the fan of the laser line, but the lens will have no protection against damage and scratches. Leica Geosystems redesigned the Leica Lino L2+ body to allow the diodes to project a wide 180 degree laser line whilst positioning the optics away from the front of the instrument to protect against damage. Leica are renown for their quality, so it should not be any surprise to see high quality optics integrated into the design of the Leica Lino L2+. This reduces diffusion of the laser line, providing a very crisp laser. Accuracy of the Laser The accuracy will determine how level the laser projects the beam. Any item set-out to this laser line will either be level or not depending on the accuracy of the laser. The Leica Lino L2+ provides the highest accuracy of any line laser both in horizontal and vertical plans. The Leica Power Range Technology provides excellent line visibility even at larger distances. The Leica Lino L2+ automatically compensates for minor alignment errors in the range of +/-4°. During this process the instrument is aligned to mm accuracy. If the automatic self-leveling range is exceeded, the laser automatically signals that the instrument is out of levelling range. Expensive measuring errors are prevented. An example of use When setting out tiles for a wall, it will be very noticeable of the tilts are not truly horizontal, or vertical. A line laser will set-out the initial horizontal and vertical line, allowing the contractor to lay the first tile, with subsequent tiles following the laser lines. For larger areas the contractor will move the instrument further away to project a wider laser line. If the beam of the laser is of a low quality, the laser line on the wall will become defused. Likewise the accuracy of the laser will further compound the problem, projecting a beam that is not truly horizontal. The Leica Lino L2+ features a very high quality laser beam, projecting a crisp line through the 180 degree fan. This allows the laser to project a wider beam at close range, ideal for small or large projects. The very high accuracy of the beam ensures that the laser is truly horizontal. If the laser is moved back, the combination of beam, optics and accuracy will not hinder the contactor. Smart Horizontal Mode

When undertaking measuring tasks, there will be occasions when you may require the horizontal distance, but the line of sight may be blocked.

Instead of measuring sections and adding them together, the brains at Leica Geosystem have introduced the tilt function into the Leica DISTO range. Not only will the instrument measure the angle of tilt, but calculate the true horizontal distance.

Therefore by simply utilising the smart measuring mode, the Leica DISTO will combine the distance and tilt measurement functions to calculate the true horizontal distance.

Smart! Well it gets better.

Leica have also incorporated a number of other calculations into the smart horizontal mode. By pressing the button for longer, the indirect height to the laser dot, angle of the instrument and distance to the laser dot will be displayed.

With the Pythagoras function, the instrument requires line of sight to both the top and bottom of the structure. By utilising the Smart Horizontal Mode when the instrument is placed on a tripod, the user can measure the height to the top and measure the height of the instrument from the ground.

How Does a Leica DISTO Measure?

This article will explain in a simple way how a Leica DISTO take a measurement & how accurate the measurements are.

Two types of length measurement
See a lightning flash and start counting the seconds. If you get to 15, divide by three – and you know that the storm is still five kilometres away. This measuring principle, which is also used by laser devices, is known as the “running time procedure”.

The speed of light is much higher than that of sound, and the times involved are extremely short where distances are limited. It thus follows that short distances of just a few metres cannot be measured with any great accuracy using the running time procedure.

Leica DISTO devices therefore operate on the phase-shift principle, and are especially accurate over short distances – as you would indeed expect from a device known popularly as a “laser rule”.

A wave on a lake, for example, is measured from crest to crest. If the wind pushes such a wave against a jetty, we can see how a new wave runs back into the water. A comparison of the crests of the incoming and outgoing waves illustrates the phase-shift principle.

A wave of light
We must start off with a wave. But how can we create one out of light?

The light actually goes on and off 50 times per second, as we use an AC power supply to light up the bulb. The Leica DISTO is fitted not with a bulb, but with a semiconductor diode, which emits a guided laser beam. This light is switched on and off 200 million times per second with “alternating current”.

We use these millions of waves (on the same principle as the water lapping against the bank of the lake) to measure the distance concerned.

How many wave crests can fit into a given space?

We hang a length of rope from an object such as a house wall and stand holding the other end at a distance of about 15 metres from the wall (i.e. the distance that we wish to measure).

We then raise and lower the rope with regular up-and-down arm movements. The rope begins to oscillate and forms waves (like water).

A slowing of the arm movement causes the size of the wave to increase, until the 15 metres available is filled with a single wave.

An increase in the speed of the up-and-down arm movement decreases the size of the waves (e.g. to three metres each). The same distance to the house wall is now occupied by various waves.

This is exactly how the Leica DISTO works.

A laser beam is used to emit various different waves simultaneously. With a frequency of 200 million waves (their speed regulated by the equivalent of the arm movements in the above example), it is possible to be accurate to the millimetre, while lower frequencies determine the higher fractions of a metre and the lowest frequency measures the number of metres.

As the crests and troughs of a laser wave are, unlike the oscillating length of rope, invisible to the naked eye, we have to resort to some technological trickery – which brings us back to the example of waves lapping against a jetty: the difference between the incoming and outgoing waves of light (i.e. the phase shift) can be measured by means of sophisticated electronics, allowing the distance to be determined to the nearest millimetre.

As you can see, where distance measurement is concerned, quite a lot goes on behind the scenes.

During a recent telephone conversion with a customer, a question was raised. How tough are the Leica DISTO range?

Well in short, very.

With the introduction of the Leica DISTO DXT model, there is no tougher instrument. Built to with stand any knocks and falls commonly encountered on a building or construction site.

Although the standard range of instruments have been designed with a strong magnesium housing encasing the laser and receive lens, they are precision instruments so will not be too happy if dropped into water.

So Leica Geosystems have incorporated several new features into the Leica DISTO DXT design.

The impact-resistant housing has been strengthened with special fibreglass-reinforced plastic bracing.

Passes drop tests from 2m height thanks to the thick rubber housing on the outside which protects the module against possible damage.

A special rubber sealing strip protects all components – even the battery compartment.

The Leica DISTO DXT is the only laser measuring instrument to pass rigorous tests according to IP 65. That means it can be jet washed to remove dirt without affecting the internal components and submerged in water.

The internal components have been design with abuse in mind. Less parts to go wrong and more importantly components that works better under arduous conditions.

OK, the Leica DISTO DXT will not be able to measure complicated architectural structures like the Leica DISTO D3a or Leica DISTO D5 models. But if you work on a building site or require a heavy duty instrument, then this is the instrument for you.

Measuring Moisture, Humidity and Condensation

Surveyors involved with identifying the causes of dampness in buildings may need to know the humidity and temperature levels in the building, as well as moisture levels in walls / floors. Effectively undertaking seven different types of readings:
1. Surface moisture content
2. Sub-surface moisture content
3. Relative humidity (%RH)
4. Ambient temperature
5. Surface temperature
6. Dew point temperature
7. Condensation

Unfortunately, the readings for moisture content and humidity are not the same. Worse still, they can not converted and require different types of instruments for each task.

If you require both moisture and humidity readings, then there is a simple solution.

Protimeter MMS
The Protimeter MMS (Moisture Measurement System) combines a moisture and humidity meters functionality into one system, effectively five instruments in one unit.

Leica Geosystems have recently launched a new range of theodolites and total stations for construction sites. The Leica Builder range incorporates similar features of the larger more powerful surveying and engineering ranges but into a simpler less complicated package.

Laser measuring - Why?

Tape Measures

Take a tape measure and measure a room. Commonly there will be furniture, tables and expensive ornaments in the way. On most occasions two people will be needed to measure over or around these obstacles. It’s quite a time consuming task. Oh yes a try not to break anything!

In order to save time, you may use an ultra-sonic tape measure. By their very nature, ultra-sonic devices are estimators and are not precision measuring instruments. If you take ten measurements of a room, you will find that 8 measurements are different.

Ultra-Sonic

Ultra-sonic devices emit a sound wave similar to ships sonar and measuring the first returning signal. If you measure a living room, the signal will bounce of furniture, tables, plants and curtains. Anything in front of the wall, will return a signal before you achieve a measurement from the wall it’s self.

Ultra-sonic instruments are cheap but not accurate. You would spend more time taking a measurement than with a tape measure.

If you want speed and accuracy, a laser measuring device is the preferred choice.

Laser Measure

A small laser beam is emitted and can be accurately positioned onto the target area. When a measurement is taken, millions of light waves are sent through the laser beam. The instrument measures the time it takes to send and receive these signals. In most cases this happens in a fraction of a second.

With a laser beam the small red dot can be position over or under an item. The laser will not be affected by surrounding obstacles and will only measure the distance to the dot.

This allows the operator to measure outdoors to a range of 200 meters. With advances in the Leica Disto technology, digital point finders help to position the laser even if you can not see the red dot. The best bit, only one person is required and it only takes a fraction of a second.

Measuring Outside

When measuring outdoors, you may not be able to see the red laser dot over a distance of 20 metres or 65 feet. The red laser dot will be visible on the target but the human eye is not powerfull enough to see the laser at a distance.

Although the Leica Disto D3 is more than capable of measure outdoors, without a viewfinder you may not be able to locate the laser dot. Try to use the red laser glasses. This will enhance the laser dot and at the same time you could start a new fashion!

Digital Pointfinder
Alternatively invest in the new Leica Disto D5 or Leica Disto D8 models. Leica have introduced the first digital pointfinder into these instrument, allowing the user to view the target on the large colour screen. Simply aim the instrument, view through the screen and measure.

This is a very big step in the evolution of laser measuring. In simple terms a digital camera incorporated into the instrument collects the image and allows the operator to view through the crystal clear display.
